Looking Forward, December 20, 2009

J.D. Shaw on December 17, 2009

The sermon text for Sunday morning is Luke 1:57-66, where we read that Zechariah and Elizabeth were faithful in following up on God's command to name their child John.  One of the marks of the Holy Spirit in our lives is that we will strive to be obedient to God's commands, both in the very clear commands such as the Ten Commandments and in the areas where what constitutes obedience is not so clear.  I pray God will use this Sunday to teach us all to look at our lives and learn how we can more faithfully and, just as important, joyfully follow God.

An added treat this Sunday will be that some old friends will be in town: the Maners!  Bill, Kim, Bella, and Causey are in the States for the holidays, and Bill will speak in both services this Sunday to share how God has been using them on the mission field in El Salvador.

It's still the Christmas season, so we're still singing Christmas hymns each service.  Sunday we will sing It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, Silent Night, Holy Night, What Child Is This, and my Christmas favorite, Joy to the World, which has a verse which goes like this:"No more let sins and sorrows grow, nor thorns infest the ground; He comes to make His blessings flow far as the curse is found."

It doesn't get any better than that.

Sunday night we will not have any evening activities, nor will we on December 27.  We won't have Wednesday night services or activities next week either, but if you will be in town please make plans to attend our Christmas Eve service Thursday night, beginning at 6PM.
